Bouches-du-Rhône is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and borders the departments of Gard, Vaucluse and Var.

The department is bounded by the Rhone on the west and the Durance on the north. The Rhone is divided into Grand Rhone and Petit-Rhône downstream of Arles, forming the Rhone Delta which is home to the Camargue. This one is one of the humid zones of the department (one finds there in particular the pond of Vaccarès and the salines of Salin-de-Giraud), among which also the pond of Berre and its annexes the ponds of Vîne and Bolmon, the Aulnes pond and the Grand Plan du Bourg in La Crau and the Lavalduc pond between Fos-sur-Mer and Istres.

The main mountain ranges in the department are the Sainte-Baume massif (1,042 meters), the Sainte-Victoire mountain (1,011 meters), the Étoile massif, the Garlaban and the Alpilles massif.
