This region is especially worth visiting from roads its natural beauty. The Hellenthal region is characterized by rugged nature, hilly countryside, and small streams that flow into the reservoir. There are many well-marked hiking trails as well as some cycling routes. You can hike around the reservoir and have a fantastic view from the dam (Oleftalsperre)—the chances of spotting a deer or bird of prey while hiking are high. But if you want to be sure to see animals, visit Wildfreigehege Nature Park, a nature park with all kinds of animals, such as deer, boar, and even wolves.

A special place nearby is Burg Reifferscheid; the castle and historic village can be visited for free. It is very characteristic and photo-worthy.
