La Noria
Heroes Square Apartment n. 80
History of the name
Typical structure with cogwheels, suitable for pulling water from small artesian wells dug by hand in fields near the coast. The water was brackish, but good for some plants such as tomatoes, the famous ones of the "pen".
The noria (Arabic etymology) was made to turn by a mule (cross donkey horse) that tied to an axis walked in a circular direction, thus operating a series of gear wheels. A long chain was tied to the largest of these wheels, which carried many buckets down the well, which came down empty and returned to the top. The water was then channeled through long furrows in the ground. To avoid the stress of the circular sense, the mule was always bandaged.
