The Location
Vieste is one of the most characteristic towns of Puglia so much that it is also called The Pearl of the Gargano. Thanks to its climate and the crystal clear waters of the sea, it has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Vieste offers a series of naturalistic, archaeological and historical attractions. The ancient heart of Vieste stretches out towards the sea and rests on a rock spur. Walking through the streets of the village of Vieste you can admire the most important religious building, namely the Co-cathedral. The splendid church dates back to the medieval period but subsequent modifications that took place in different historical periods has changed its original appearance. Another jewel of Vieste is the majestic triangular-shaped castle built by the Swabians, located in a spectacular position near a cliff overlooking the sea. The necropolis called La Salata is also characteristic and ancient. It is an archaeological site dating back to the III-IV century AD. composed of a series of tombs and niches set in the rock and is the most important burial site of the Gargano. There are numerous activities to be carried out and attractions to be admired in the surroundings, such as the Sea Caves, majestic natural cavities scattered along the marvelous coast between Vieste and Mattinata. They can be visited with organized boat tours or by renting a dinghy or private boat. Another pristine marine environment a few miles from the mainland where you can enjoy a turquoise and crystalline sea and admire the marine fauna and flora are the Tremiti Islands. They can be reached from Vieste, Peschici and Rodi Garganico with ferries that leave during the summer season. The Umbra Forest is another place not to be missed, a unique environment for its thick mixed vegetation between Northern European and Mediterranean plants. It is located in the heart of the Gargano and begins a few kilometers from Vieste. It is possible to reach the tourist area by car (about 25 km from Vieste) and then continue along a marked path on foot or by bicycle. There is a small museum, a nature-themed playground, a bar, a museum and a pretty lake inhabited by various fish.
