About This Property
The countryside: Although there are mountains in many directions this is quite a fertile part of Sardinia, with many olive groves and vineyards - the wines have an excellent reputation. This is an ideal countryside to explore - north and south along the coasts or maybe inland to Sassari, the main town of the region. It’s central piazza gives it the air of a town in Tuscany. There are some beautiful beaches and coves up the coast to the tip of the island at Stintino and the nature reserve island of Asinara. Inland you can go on a winding road to the hilltop town of Villanova Monteleone, perched precariously overlooking inland lakes. To the south, the road runs south to the quaint town of Bosa, swooping up and down like a roller-coaster for 40 kms, up on the cliffs one minute, at sea level the next, and taking you to some good beaches on the way. To the north of Alghero are the dramatic cliffs of Capo Caccia with its spectacular sea caves( 700 steps down!).
Restaurants and travel: Within walking distance of the apartment are restaurants for Italian food and a famous pizzeria which sells pizza by the metre! There are bars, other shops and two supermarkets also within walking distance. The old town of Alghero is about 15 mins walk along the beach road where there are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops of all kinds. There is a weekly street market.
Set on the beach, yet only a short walk to the town the apartment is an ideal choice for those who wish to enjoy a memorable holiday without requiring a car. There are frequent buses around Alghero and to the neighbouring towns and resorts. A narrow gauge railway connects you with Sassari, the main town of the region. Rail connections then take you all over Sardinia to Cagliari and Oristano in the south and Olbia and the Costa Smeralda in the east. A weekly train in the summer goes from Sassari to Tempio, a mountain spa town with an interesting market and then on to Palau in the north of the Costa Smeralda
Walking tours and horse riding : You can reach Alghero with Ryanair low cost plane, from London, Barcelona, Madrid, Frankfurt-Hahn, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo Torp, Weeze, Memmingen, Billund, Bratislava, Pisa, Milan and Rome. The airport is 10 minutes from the town. Thomson have a weekly flight from London Gatwick too. Easyet flies from London Gatwick, Bristol UK, Basel and Milan to Olbia airport, 90 mins by car from Alghero. There is a railway-station with connections from Olbia, Sassari and Cagliari. To reach Alghero by car, follow indications from the SS131 motorway and turn-off on 291 highway to Alghero.
The renters can provide accompanied walking tours near Alghero. There are short walks along the beach and sand dunes to the nearby town of Fertilia, half day walks along the coast to the vantage point of Punta Giglio with its magnificent views of capo caccia and Alghero or half day walks inland in the hills around the beautiful monastary of Valverde.
