Apartment
About This Property
Fans of Donna Leon’s fictional crime-buster, Commissario Guido Brunetti, will certainly feel at home here. The offices of the “Questura” where he works are a few doors away.
Ca’ dei Greci is an unusually light and airy apartment with lovely views over a wide canal - gondolas glide past and a water taxi can drop you at your front door. It offers spacious and classically Venetian surroundings for up to eight guests with four very private bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The main sitting-room has three double-height windows opening directly onto a balcony overlooking the canal, with a park beyond. It’s a charming, central room, very Venetian in style with an oriental rug on a traditional terrazzo floor, old mirrors and tasteful artworks.
The informal TV room to the side has huge, comfortable sofas, an upright piano for the musically inclined and two windows also overlooking the canal. The air-conditioned dining room is a picture of elegance in which classic wooden cabinetry and the bold geometric patterns of the polished parquet flooring are offset by the delicacy of a fine crystal chandelier and pretty cane-backed chairs. If you fancy a formal Venetian dinner, this is the place!
The dining room looks out towards the Campinale of St Mark's which you can see over the terracotta rooftops. Next to it stands the white, light-filled kitchen which is fully equipped and features traditional terazzo flooring plus a scrubbed wooden country style table for lazy breakfasts or preparing lunch or dinner.
There are four large and very tasteful bedrooms – three doubles and a twin - each stylishly presented with antique furniture, comfortable beds and beautiful wardrobes. The master bedroom has a secret door leading to its own hidden bathroom and canal views. The double bedroom at the back looks out over a pretty, palm-filled garden and the twin is charming and roomy.
So – ideal for a large family or for couples staying together (and needing their own space), Ca’ Dei Greci is a Venetian home from home.
OUR COMMENT
Space and relaxed grandeur in a fabulous spot…
A short walk to the atmospheric Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni and its wonderful Carpaccio paintings, the monumental Dominican Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo (one of the largest churches in Venice and burial place of no fewer than 25 Venetian Doges), and to Campo Santa Maria Formosa (site of the Querini Stampalia) passing Palazzo Grimani on the way.
And even closer to home - moments to the cavernous and newly restored Church of San Lorenzo (long closed but now home to Ocean Space - a collaborative platform focusing on ocean conservation) and to the Museo di Dipinti Sacri Byzanti (Museum of Icons) just along the canal.
Also within easy reach of the local Punto supermarket for easy self-catering and to the vaporetto (water bus) stop at San Zaccaria for easy travel around the city.
