Neighbouring Carpignano Salentino is also packed with history. The Byzantine frescoes in the Cripta di Santa Cristina are to be missed. Some date back as far as 959AD. The ducale palace and the Palazzo Chironi are also worth visiting. The town has many excellent grocery stores and supermarkets. The weekly market takes place on Saturday mornings.
The historic port town of Otranto (18 minutes), with its castle, lively harbour and stunning beach makes a great day out.
Not to be missed is the city of Lecce, the “Florence of the South” (25 minutes). The city is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture and Roman treasures.
