The Byzantine frescoes in the Cripta di Santa Cristina are to be missed. Some date back as far as 959AD. The ducal palace and the Palazzo Chironi are also worth visiting. The town has many excellent grocery stores and supermarkets. The weekly market takes place on Saturday mornings.
Martano (7 minutes) is a lovely Greco-Salentine town that has retained its medieval walls and historic buildings. It is fascinating to wander through the streets and soak up the atmosphere. You can also try the local cuisine, tasty local wines and some of the best olive oil in Italy at one of the many excellent restaurants in the town. If you miss the market in Carpignano Salentino, then head to Martano’s market (Tuesday morning). This is another great place to pick up the freshest local ingredients.
The historic port town of Otranto (15 minutes), with its castle, lively harbour and stunning beach makes a great day out. Not to be missed is the city of Lecce, the “Florence of the South” (35 minutes). The city is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture and Roman treasures.
Some of Puglia\'s most beautiful beaches are close by, including the Baia dei Turchi (18 minutes) and the famous Faraglioni di Sant\'Andrea (16 minutes).
