Location
The house is in the Val d’Itria – which is famous for its olive oil and trulli [small, conical houses only found in this part of Italy]. Many of Puglia’s most beautiful sites are within easy reach.
The closest town is Ostuni (15 minutes) which is known as the White City. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley it is a charming spot. Explore the narrow medieval streets or the famous cathedral which combines many different architectural styles. Don’t miss the bustling weekly market (Saturday morning) where you can pick the best local ingredients, from around the region. Alternatively, there are a couple of good supermarkets in town.
Ceglie Messapica (17 minutes) is a charming town. Its well-preserved historic centre is a mix of Baroque architecture and white-washed buildings lining narrow streets. Ceglie Messapica is famous for its excellent food, particularly its ice cream pastries and baking.
For an ideal day trip, the town Alberobello (50 minutes) looks like something from a fairytale. It is a town of trulli and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica it is well-known for its delicious cuisine.
For guests keen to get to the sea, some of the most striking beaches in Italy, on the Adriatic coast are about 25 minutes away. For more sporty visitors, cycle tours can be arranged on the Val d’Itria cycle route which runs the length of the valley along the route of an ancient aqueduct.
The closest airport is at Bari, a 1 hour 25-minute drive from the house.
