Stavros is a seaside village located 17 km north east of Chania, on the northern end of the Akrotiri peninsula. Impressive is the steep mountain with camel shape that rises opposite the port of the village. In that mountain was filmed main scenes of the film "Zorba the Greek", where Anthony Quinn danced the famous Sirtaki 1964. Then Stavros was a small fishing village. Today the area has developed into a major tourist resort with many hotels and tourist facilities. Both beaches contribute to this development. The main beach is located east of the village, at the foot of the mountain and near the picturesque harbor area. Enclosed in a circular bay is totally isolated from the winds, creating amazing scenery that is worth seeing. The bay, reminiscent lagoon has white sand and turquoise shallow waters. The contrast of the wild mountain landscape with the beautiful calm beach makes Stavros a unique place for swimming.
The second beach of Stavros is located northwest of the village in just 200 meters west of the central beach and it is quite and less crowded.
Get the chance to swim at the famous beach, where the movie 'Zorbas the Greek' was filmed. See the last scene (the dance)
